This week's topic: Discussion groups.Do you belong to any (besides Early Reviewers)? Approximately how many? Are there any in particular that you participate in more avidly? How often do you check?
When I first joined LT at the beginning of March I was a member of about 20 groups but due to the time constraints of my coursework and blogging I cut it right down to just two, Early Reviewers and The 50 Book Challenge.
I do participate in others when a topic interests me, some of which are Book Talk, 40 Something LibraryThingers, and Thing(amabrarians) that go bump in the night, and of course The Green Dragon - but to be honest I lost interest in the talk side of LT fairly quickly, probably because there are so many groups that unless you have a lot of time to spare, finding the wood in all the trees is almost impossible.
In the end I just concentrated on the interesting libraries and people that had friended me as well as cataloguing my books and reviewing them. And now of course I've joined Tuesday Thingers.
How does everyone else manage their online time so that it doesn't eat into their offline time?

ReplyDeleteThe truth is I'm not very good at managing my online time. Sometimes I set a timer so that I am aware of the passage of time and don't spend huge amounts of it online.

ReplyDeleteI need to do a better job. Aside from LT, I post on 2 internet forums and it adds up to hundreds of threads. There's just no way to stay up to date on everything!

ReplyDeleteI have also found it difficult to het involved with much of the LT forums as its so difficult to follow a conversation( or is it just me!) Like you tend to keep (vaguely) up with the Early Review and the 50 book challenge
ReplyDeleteHaha I'm with Lisa... what is offline time? Lol. I mostly just keep an eye on the clock and cut myself off when I think it's been too long without doing something else :)
ReplyDeleteI've recently started making my tv time into my online time - I can read and post during commercials, and the length of the show is an easy way to remind myself how long I've been online. So far it's working...=)
ReplyDeleteI too spend an inordinate amount of time online - I work in a library in front of a computer all day, teach at night online, and try to keep up with things that I am interested in somewhere in all of that.

I am pretty good about managing what needs to get done, and LT usually goes first when I have important things to do. Otherwise, when I don't, I spend a lot of time online.

I can get quite lost online if I'm not careful. I set a timer like LisaMM. Unfortunately I'm not online enough lately but I'm hoping things will settle down enough in a few weeks.
